I enjoyed revisiting Ellis Island and especially the “hard hat” tour of unrenovated buildings that can still bring back that feeling of what it might have been like to show up here as an immigrant. Particularly poignant was this window view from one of the hospital buildings with a view of the Statue of Liberty.
One can only imagine the activity that must have taken place in what is now an abandoned and surreal scene on the island in New York Harbor. The Save Ellis Island Foundation eventually plans to renovate all these buildings over time but for now they are open for limited public viewing.
